The Myth of TyrannyPosted on: March 3rd 2021

The myth of tyranny is that it arrives wearing jackboots and a swastika. Maybe it waves a hammer and sickle flag or reads from a little red book. The myth of tyranny is that it could never happen to us, we believe in freedom, democracy and human rights, we would immediately recognise it as evil and resist. The myth of tyranny is that you would never accept tyranny. Would you?
“It’s for our own good”
“It’s just to keep us safe”
Never mind that you can’t go to work, it’s just a job. Never mind that you can’t see your friends, it’s just your friends. Never mind that you can’t see your family, it’s just your family. Just follow the rules. After all, they are there to protect you. It’s not really tyranny if it’s meant to protect you is it?
Surrendering liberty is ok if it’s for your own good isn’t it? Liberty isn’t important at the moment. In fact, why should liberty be important at all, I mean, let’s face it, the world is a much safer place without freedom. And truthfully, it does feel good to do your part.
To be a good citizen. You don’t need freedom. Freedom is dangerous. Especially for other people, other people can’t be free. They’re responsible for you, their duty is to protect you, if they’re free they might not do that. Freedom is selfish. No, far too dangerous. Better to have no liberty, at least then you’re safe. Besides, you’ll be allowed to do things again, sure you might have to agree to some treatments but that’s ok isn’t it? Your body, their choice, that’s reasonable.
It will look like freedom, you’ll be allowed to do all the things you could do before, as long as it’s safe of course. They’ll tell you though, after all, they’ve got nothing but your safety at heart.
Tyrants don’t have their people’s safety at heart, sure they claim to, they tell you that the actions they take are for your own good. But, these actions are for your own good, so it’s definitely not tyranny.
No, tyrants want control. They enjoy control, telling people where to go, what to do, who they can see. This isn’t that though, your leaders don’t want control, they just want you to be safe. I mean, they do tell you where to go, what to do and who you can see, but they don’t enjoy it. Why would they? They say they want you to have liberty, you just have to give it up when they say. That’s ok, they’ll definitely give it back.
Anyway, isn’t this all a bit daft. You would recognise tyranny, you’d fight against it, why would you want to live under it? No, it’s definitely not tyranny, you’re agreeing to it, no one agrees with tyranny.
