5 Simple Reasons to join the UK Liberty PartyPosted on: October 16th 2019

Consistent Principles – A Home for All Advocates of Liberty
Unlike most political parties, the UK Liberty Party puts philosophy, not ideology at the heart of its policy approach. Broadly speaking, philosophy is a guide to understanding reality and human nature, and to adopting standards or principles of thought and action conducive to the flourishing of your life. Bad philosophy constitutes a junk heap of unwarranted conclusions, false generalizations, undefined contradictions, undigested slogans and unidentified ambitions, and the individual consequences of living according to such unstable principles are obvious. Likewise, public policy based on bad philosophy leads to major disruptions in the natural order of society and economy, leading at best to stagnation and corruption, and much worse besides.
The UK Liberty Party adheres to an individualist moral philosophy whose political expression is to be concluded in individual rights, limited government and free markets. Human life is the bedrock of all values – the necessary pre-condition for any want or need – and each individual human life is sustained only by applying reason to reality in pursuit of the values that sustain it. By definition, reason is fundamentally the undertaking of an individual only, and thus requires individual freedom for its full realization – that is, the right to consent on all matters. Such a vision is consistently applicable to every ideology derived from liberty, be it Libertarianism, minarchism, propertarianism, classical liberalism, small-state conservatism, anarchism, and so on, making the UK Liberty Party a home for all those with a persuasion for liberty.
Stepping Stones – A Reasoned and Self-Aware Approach to Politics
With the extensive body of laws, regulations and taxes currently inflicted upon us, along with a veritable leviathan in the shape of our public sector, the UK is a long way from a vision of government compatible with principles of liberty. Compounding this, the political alignment of the UK’s population trends dangerously close to outright authoritarianism: in recent votes, we have seen almost half of the population vote to be governed by an unelected, unaccountable and monolithic bureaucracy overseas, while over 40% rallied behind the party of an avowed socialist. Liberty, on the other hand, has no serious representation on the national stage, and is more often misrepresented in the media than allowed to present its own spokespeople.
The UK Liberty Party are under no illusions about the mountain we need to climb to achieve positive change in this country. The fact is that until the liberty movement develops an effective and recognisable political platform, our ideas will set the agenda only in obscurity – at fringe events which virtually no one attends, and in the manifestos of fringe parties which virtually no one reads.
Simplicity is the starting point of any complex challenge, and the UK Liberty Party adopt a strategy of ‘Stepping Stones’ to achieve this. With the principles of a consistent philosophy to guide us, and with a meticulous broadness of scope, we propose and support the introduction, amendment or repeal of any laws, taxes and regulations whose effect in doing so is to reduce the power and reach of the state, and which increases the capacity of individuals to choose and consent on matters concerning their own lives. Rather than the compromise of a small-state solution, each ‘Stepping Stone’ represents a battle in the philosophically consistent war for greater individual freedom, allowing us at all times, on all issues, and in cooperation with every person, politician or pressure group whose view on a subject aligns with our own to push ever closer in the direction of true liberty.
MAPS – Your Policies Brought to Life
The UK Liberty Party place great emphasis on mobilizing the talent and ambition of our members, and one of the most important aspects of this is to enable direct and continuous involvement in our policy approach. Thus, we have developed an online ‘Make A Proposal System’ (MAPS) that allows members to submit, generate support for and ultimately have adopted as party policy, their ideas on how to achieve liberty in the UK. Once adopted, your policy will be included in the party’s election manifesto, and can form the basis of single-issue campaigns in which the party will work with you to raise public awareness and petition MPs to raise or support the proposal in Parliament. This is one of a number of innovative tools the UK Liberty Party has developed as part of our decentralized membership participation approach.
POINTS – Recognition for your Hard Work
Grassroots politics is often a thankless endeavour, and this is especially true in smaller parties without the reach or infrastructure to help hardworking members make a measurable impact. Without a visible record of achievement or some small material recognition as an incentive, it can be difficult for members to justify spending precious time from their lives on the daily party grind.
In the same spirit as MAPS, the UK Liberty Party want to support our members to contribute to the growth and success of the party. Our ‘POsitive INTeraction System’ (POINTS) rewards you with credits based on your contributions as an active and effective supporter of the party, which can then be redeemed in a variety of ways in the online store. Members can receive POINTS for a range of activities, from the vital to the seemingly unimportant – for example, a small number of POINTS are available for logging in to your account daily, sharing the website on social media and reading newsletters, while the big bucks are earned by recruiting members, submitting publishable articles and proposing successful MAPS policies, etc.
At present, the POINTS store includes branded accessories like coffee mugs and clothing like hoodies and t-shirts. This range, along with other forms of redeemable goodies, will be expanded as the party grows.
Low Cost, No Hassle Membership
The standard model of political party membership in the UK often makes joining feel like an expensive, inconvenient and pointless gesture – manually give a sizeable chunk of money every year to a mega-rich party which already has massive corporate and/or union backers, and they’ll occasionally send you a generic email newsletter and let you vote for pre-selected leadership candidates once every few years. The cheapest mainstream option are the Tories at £25, the Greens want £36, while the Lib Dems try for a whopping £70 (but if you’re a Lib Dem, you deserve it, honestly)!
The UK Liberty Party think that a basic, inexpensive and passive subscription model forces the party to work to earn your membership month after month. Starting with a one-time fee of £10, members subsequently pay an automatic monthly fee based on what they feel they can afford - £1.50, £2.50 or £3.50 – which can be easily cancelled if we turn out to be useless. Alternatively, if you think we’re already amazing and will continue to be so, you can pay a one-time fee of £100 to become a Lifetime Member, which will reward you with a huge amount of POINTS!
